Gmail for Android May Soon Preview Photos and Attachments Directly in Notifications

Google is reportedly testing a new Gmail update for Android that makes attachments, especially images, much easier to identify without opening the app. Until now, Gmail notifications only showed the sender name, subject line and a short preview of the email. According to reports, the latest update introduces a more visual and informative notification layout.

What’s New in Gmail’s Updated Notifications

    1. Paperclip Indicator in the Subject Line

Gmail now adds a paperclip symbol at the beginning of the subject line to clearly show when an email contains an attachment.

    2. Thumbnail Preview for Photo Attachments

Instead of the sender profile picture on the right side of the notification, Gmail will now show a small thumbnail preview when the attachment is an image. This makes it easier to recognise photos directly from the notification shade.

    3. Larger Image Preview in Expanded Notifications

Expanding the notification reveals a larger rectangular preview similar to what many messaging apps offer. This view now prioritises the attachment preview over the email body text for quicker context.

    4. Multiple Thumbnails for Multiple Images

When an email contains more than one photo, Gmail displays a row of additional thumbnails beneath the main preview. This helps users quickly see all attached images without opening the app.

    5. Clear Labels for Non Image Attachments

For PDFs, documents and other file types, Gmail shows a labelled pill with part of the file name. The paperclip indicator continues to appear in the collapsed version of the notification.

Google has introduced Nano Banana Pro

In related news, Google has introduced Nano Banana Pro, an enhanced version of its image generator now powered by the Gemini 3 Pro Image model. The upgraded version delivers clearer visuals, sharper multilingual text and improved graphic detail for diagrams and infographics. It also offers better consistency when blending up to fourteen inputs and preserves multiple subject identities more accurately.

Nano Banana Pro introduces new creative controls including region specific edits, advanced lighting adjustments and high resolution image output. The feature is rolling out globally across Google AI with limited access for free users and higher generation limits for Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers. It will also be available across Workspace apps, Search AI Mode in the United States and NotebookLM.

    Conclusion

Gmail’s refreshed notification layout aims to make email interactions faster and more intuitive, especially when dealing with attachments. With clearer visual cues and smarter previews, users can understand the content of an email without opening the app. Combined with Google’s ongoing AI upgrades like Nano Banana Pro, it is clear the company is focused on delivering a more efficient and visually rich user experience across its ecosystem.
