OPPO India has announced advancements in LUMO Lab, an exclusive imaging initiative aimed at improving smartphone camera technology tailored specifically for Indian consumers. This initiative is pivotal in OPPO’s journey to develop technology that resonates with local needs.
Launched in November 2025, LUMO Lab has become a cornerstone in OPPO’s ‘tuned-for-India’ innovation efforts, contributing to significant imaging breakthroughs in Find X9 Ultra and Find X9s smartphones.
The initiative has seen collaboration between OPPO’s global imaging experts and prominent Indian creative professionals, including photographers Joseph Radhik and Ashik Aseem. Over 160 photographers, creators, and users have participated in various sessions, photowalks, and field tests across major cities like Jaipur, Delhi, and Mumbai, focusing on real-world validation of imaging technology.
These collaborative sessions have examined a range of challenges in photography, including rendering authentic skin tones under diverse lighting, ensuring colour accuracy during vibrant festivals, capturing architectural portraits, and showcasing the intricate textures of traditional attire. Insights gathered from these studies have influenced the imaging enhancements evident in the OPPO Find X9 Series, aimed at depicting India’s cultural vibrancy and authenticity.
Simon Liu, Director of Imaging Technology at OPPO, commented on the complexity of imaging in India, highlighting the challenges posed by varied lighting, skin tones, and cultural aesthetics. He noted that LUMO Lab combines engineering precision with local artistic insights to create images that resonate with Indian cultural identity.
The LUMO Lab has focused on several key areas to refine imaging quality. The first phase targeted the natural portrayal of Indian skin tones across different lighting scenarios, working closely with Indian photographers to achieve a balanced and true-to-life representation.
Additionally, efforts during major Indian celebrations, such as Holi, concentrated on capturing vivid colours and motion without distortion, fine-tuning OPPO’s colour science to produce authentic images that reflect the lively atmosphere of the events.
Recent phases of the project have worked on achieving harmony between people and India’s distinct architecture, focusing on essential elements like exposure and colour tone to ensure both subjects are depicted with clarity and depth.
The integration of advanced hardware and computational imaging into OPPO’s products represents a significant evolution in human-centered imaging innovation. Services like the LUMO Image Engine, co-engineered with Hasselblad, contribute to creating realistic and vibrant imagery.
The Find X9 Series is designed to cater to both professional creators and lifestyle storytellers, integrating advanced features for nuanced imaging while remaining user-friendly for those looking to share everyday moments easily. OPPO’s vision highlights technology that not only captures images but also understands users, aiming to empower them in creating authentic visual narratives.
