Inside Mahindra’s State-Of-The-Art EV Manufacturing Facility In Chakan

Having visited Mahindra’s new Electric Origin manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune, it won’t be farfetched for me to say that the company is setting a new benchmark in electric vehicle (EV) production with the launch of its brand-new EV lineup, which includes the BE 6 and the XEV 9e. These state-of-the-art SUVs, designed with Mahindra’s Heartcore philosophy, are already turning heads wherever they’re being spotted.

At the core of Mahindra’s Heartcore design philosophy (pun not intended) is the attempt to craft SUVs that aren’t just vehicles but emotional experiences. That, in many ways, explains the bold exteriors and thoughtfully curated interiors. But nothing embodies this vision as much as the interiors of these cars. They deliver everything from dynamic styling and premium materials to cutting-edge technology. Let’s take a closer look at how these groundbreaking SUVs are brought to life.

    Green and Sustainable Manufacturing

Mahindra is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. The facilities use renewable energy sources, advanced water recycling systems, and waste management protocols to ensure minimal environmental impact. From eco-friendly paints to recyclable materials, sustainability is woven into every aspect of production.

    Precision Engineering

    Mahindra-Plant

Spanning an impressive 88,000 m², Mahindra’s EV plant features a fully automated press shop, an AI-driven body shop, and one of India’s most advanced robotic paint shops, ensuring top-notch quality and efficiency. The facility deploys over 500 robots and fully automated transfer systems in the body shop, all monitored through an IoT-powered ‘Nerve Center’ for real-time insights and end-to-end traceability. Leveraging Industry 4.0 technologies, including AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots) and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles), Mahindra reinforces its commitment to safety, speed, and reliability in sustainable manufacturing.

    Leading-Edge Battery Manufacturing

Mahindra’s battery manufacturing line is among the world’s most compact, utilising patented processes and lean module assembly to deliver top-notch efficiency. This fully automated facility integrates world-class, indigenously developed manufacturing processes to produce, store, and transfer high-performance, long-lasting batteries using Industry 4.0 technologies. Featuring a patented pallet design for optimal insulation and geometric accuracy, along with hidden cell terminal welding for enhanced connectivity, the plant ensures robust battery performance.

Multi-layered end-of-line testing simulates real-world conditions, supported by IP67 ingress protection, real-time temperature monitoring, and automated anomaly isolation. With a no-fault-forward strategy and proprietary switching technology, the facility guarantees superior product quality and reliability, reaffirming Mahindra’s commitment to durability, safety, and best-in-class battery solutions for electric mobility.

    Human-Centric Design Process

While automation plays a significant role, the human touch remains vital. Expert engineers and designers collaborate to ensure that every vehicle reflects Mahindra’s commitment to excellence. The interiors, featuring eco-conscious materials like recycled PET fabrics and Sage Green finishes, are crafted to provide luxury and comfort without compromising sustainability.

    The Technological Edge

    Mahindra-Body-Shop

All the futuristic technology made possible by Mahindra’s cars is also crafted in-house at the Chakan plant. This stands true for its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which gives the BE 6 and XEV 9e Level 2+ capabilities, including multi-sensor fusion, lane-change assist, and collision detection. With Mahindra Artificial Intelligence Architecture (MAIA), these SUVs get facial recognition, augmented reality heads-up displays, and over-the-air updates. The same AI-driven approach ensures seamless operations in the manufacturing process. The facilities are part of a connected ecosystem that allows real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and efficient resource allocation.

    Driving the Future

Whether it’s the lightning-fast charging, intelligent braking systems, or luxurious interiors, the BE 6 and XEV 9e embody the promise of a cleaner, greener, and smarter future. And it all begins in the state-of-the-art facilities where these marvels are crafted with precision and passion. As Mahindra drives forward into the EV era, its world-class manufacturing plants stand as a testament to the brand’s vision.
