Switching from Android to iPhone or the other way around may soon become far simpler. According to a reports, Apple and Google are actively collaborating to improve cross platform device migration, aiming to streamline how users transfer data during initial setup.
A Unified Setup Experience in the Works
Google has reportedly rolled out an Android Canary build that includes early components of this joint effort. The feature is visible on all Pixel devices running Android Canary 2512 (ZP11.251121.010), while Apple is expected to introduce support through an upcoming iOS 26 developer beta.
Both companies have confirmed they are working on a system designed to make data transfer easier across the two ecosystems. However, detailed specifics such as supported data categories or exact migration steps are yet to be revealed.
The new switching experience is expected to offer
• support for more data types
• a more seamless transfer flow between Android and iOS
• better reliability compared to existing migration apps
As these builds are developer focused, users may experience performance issues until the feature moves into public beta channels.
No Launch Timeline Yet
There is currently no confirmed rollout date for the final version. Google has indicated that Android support may differ depending on device models, and widespread availability will follow once testing is completed. Until then, users must continue relying on existing tools Apple’s Move to iOS app and Google’s Android Switch app.
Apple’s New AppMigrationKit A Major Step Forward
Apple is also developing a new framework called AppMigrationKit, which will allow developers to enable export and import of third party app data between Android and iOS.
Key points about AppMigrationKit
• currently in testing
• enables developers to support a single session migration
• designed specifically for transferring data to and from non Apple platforms
• expected to power a new Transfer to Android option in iPhone settings
• Google is preparing a matching Transfer to iPhone feature on Android
This marks one of the first major cooperative efforts between the two companies in the app data migration space.
Cross Platform Sharing Already Growing
This collaboration follows Google’s recent update enabling Android’s Quick Share to work with Apple’s AirDrop. Starting with the Pixel 10 series, users can now send files across Android and Apple devices without companion apps. Pixel phones even appear directly in the AirDrop list on iPhones and Macs.
The rollout will expand to additional Android devices soon, further bridging the gap between the two platforms.
