Kanye West set to acquire right-wing social media platform Parler

Kanye West cannot stop making headlines ever since his divorce from Kim Kardashian. The ‘I am a God’ rapper was seen making outlandish comments against her ex-wife and then about her boyfriend when Kim started dating Pete Davidson. Kanye was seen calling Pete Davidson ‘Skete’ on several occasions on social media which sparked a slew of memes across the internet. Everything up until now was considered an amusing banter amongst Ye fans and other internet users (of course, not Kim) but things took a steep left turn when the rapper was seen making anti-semitic comments while making public or podcast appearances. The internet quickly turned its back on Kanye with platforms like Instagram and Twitter deleting some of Kanye’s hate-mongering posts and ultimately banning him from the platforms altogether. Now, Ye has yet again made headlines for a controversial reason as he has decided to acquire the right-wing social media platform, Parler.

Kanye Acquires Parler

Just shortly after Kanye West was banned from mainstream platforms for sharing anti-semitic posts, Kanye West has made a bid to purchase the right-wing friendly social media platform, Parler. West, who is now legally known as Ye will now be gaining control of Parler allowing him to share his unrestricted thoughts. In his official statement, Ye noted that “In a world where conservative opinions are considered to be controversial, we have to make sure we have the right to freely express ourselves”

Parler was introduced back in August 2018 but it did not gain mainstream traction until 2020. The controversial platform was taken offline due to its connection with the US Capitol violence, but it quickly relaunched in a month. Ye and Parlement Technologies, who run Parler have not stated the exact price for which the former has acquired the platform.

Right now, there is no way to know whether Parler will be making its way to the mainstream climbing up the social media ladder already crowded with multiple platforms. Parler is currently collecting the crumbles left by platforms like Twitter and Instagram as people banned from those platforms usually make their way to platforms like Parler. However, the platform can soon become irrelevant as Elon Musk’s Twitter acquisition could bring relaxation to its content moderation policy.

Madlad builds the universe in Minecraft!

Minecraft players often take the internet by storm. The exceptional game allows players to build to their imagination with the help of an unlimited supply of blocks and space. Players create mega structures inside the game be it on land, water, or sky. However, this time around a crazy Minecraft player has taken it to the next level. YouTuber/Minecraft player ChrisDaCow has created the ‘entire universe’ inside the game!

Universe in Minecraft

If the internet has proven anything in the past decade it is that dedicated Minecraft players hold the power to create just about anything. Be it depicting the middle heart or creating a working computer that can be used to play Tetris (Game-Ception!) Minecraft players surely do not lack creativity! Now, Minecraft player ChrisDaCow has pushed the envelope on what can be built in the game by building a universe. Check out the video below –

Sure, the astonishing build does not encompass the ‘entire universe’, but surely provides a look at some key elements of outer space. The most noteworthy wonder here is the Sun and the planets in our solar system. The Pillars of Creation can also be seen in the Minecraft universe. The best part about this build for me is the black hole which looks exactly like Nolan’s space adventure film Interstellar. The creator shared that it took around two months of constant work for him to build the universe in the game. However, he is not new to the game with an experience of over 9 years.

Twitter rolls out ‘Edit’ option

For years Twitter users have adamantly demanded the option to edit tweets. I’ve had to delete a tweet and write it down after missing out on a word or misspelling one many times, I am sure you have gone through the same. But it looks like Twitter has finally heard what its users suggested for years and provided an edit option, but there is a catch! Weeks after Twitter announced that it will launch an edit option for its paid subscribers, the microblogging social media giant posted its very first edited tweet. Check it out below:

Twitter’s Edit Option

https://twitter.com/TwitterBlue/status/1575590534529556480?s=20&t=rhUXBEFl2lNda7Er4f140A

As of now, only Twitter Blue subscribers living in New Zealand, Canada and Australia can edit their tweets. Thus it is a paid feature and not a free one. The company has stated that Blue subscribers in the US will soon be getting the feature but there is no word about the feature making its way to Twitter in India as there is not even a Twitter Blue subscription model launched in the country. In the tweet above, you can see a pencil symbol which notifies users that the tweet was edited. Users can then click on the pencil symbol and check out the edit history of the tweet. So, users thinking that they can easily hide their typos and mistakes by simply editing a tweet won’t be able to do so.

I think Twitter as a microblogging website has surely gotten late to introduce this feature. The edit option should have made its way to Twitter years back but better late than never! To edit their tweets users need to pay up $4.99 per month for a Twitter Blue subscription. When it comes to the actual functionality of the edit button, users can edit their tweets multiple times only in the first 30 minutes after the tweet has been published. Twitter describes the 30-minute time frame as a short period of time to fix typos and missed tags. being an ardent fan of the microblogging platform, I cannot wait for Twitter Blue and the edit option to become available in India.

WhatsApp to roll out ‘Call Links’ feature soon

WhatsApp head Will Cathcart recently took to Twitter and announced that the messaging app will be introducing the ‘Call Links’ feature. In the tweet, the WhatsApp head revealed that users will now be able to join a call using just a link and will be available for both video and audio calls. The feature will be rolling out next week and you will be able to get on a video/audio call with your group of friends with a simple URL click.

WhatsApp Call Links

With the ‘Call Links’ feature, users will be able to simply tap the option and generate a link for the audio or video call. Users can then share the link easily with friends and family. Users need to note that they will require the latest version of WhatsApp to enable this feature. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that WhatsApp is testing a new feature of calling up to 32 people in one video call. A similar feature is available in audio calls right now however, not for video. It is evident that Meta is taking notes from Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and similar platforms with the ‘Call Links’ feature. Users should note that the call link will expire after 90 days of inactivity. Whereas, if a link is sent to someone who doesn’t have WhatsApp then they will be redirected to WhatsApp’s download page on either Google’s Playstore or Apple App Store.

WhatsApp right now is in a transitional phase where the platform is turning out to become much further than just a mere messaging app. It was last month the platform started testing out WhatsApp Communities, which is basically similar to Facebook’s Groups. The Communities feature allows an admin to create a community with multiple user groups. A benefit of the WhatsApp Communities over Facebook Groups is that they aren’t public and users need to have an invitation in order to join. It looks like WhatsApp is going to make major changes in the coming years to its overall user experience.

Instagram stories under 60 seconds will no longer be split into segments

If you’ve been on Instagram for a long time, you’ve seen a gradual change in the social media platform. The social media app which started off as an image-sharing platform eventually became a confusing mix of photos and videos, then the story format staple to Snapchat crawled its way to Instagram, and finally was Reels which was nothing short of a blatant rip-off of TikTok. Right now, it is visible that Instagram is focussing more on becoming a video platform as more and more short-form video creators make their way. As a way to merge its video products into one, Instagram has announced that Stories under 60 seconds in length will no longer be split into 15-second segments.

Instagram Story Update

An in-app alert was recently posted by social media expert Matt Navarra on Twitter which showcased Instagram’s new story update. The alert read ‘Videos up to 60 seconds long will no longer be broken up into segments.’ Whenever users will update their application they’ll get a notification stating that their Instagram stories will no longer be sliced up into small segments, making it an interruption-free viewing experience. This ultimately benefits the users as they won’t have to tap a story away or move on to another story quickly if they’re not interested.

Instagram has been testing out this new feature for a while with select users. It was a part of the Meta-owned platform’s process to integrate broader video options for users. It was back in October 2021 when Instagram retired its IGTV brand and combined IGTV and feed videos in one format. Whereas, back in July Instagram announced that all videos posted under 15 minutes will be uploaded as Reels. The change in story duration to 60 seconds is not exactly a surprising change. Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri had shared back at the start of the year that the platform will be doubling down and prioritizing its video.

The platform disappointed its users when it rolled out a TikTok-Esque full-screen feed. Users were vocally disappointed with the full-screen Instagram feed which forced the company to go back on the controversial change. Looking at the popularity of video-sharing platforms it is understandable that Instagram is adamant about being one. But it’s yet to be seen if users are interested in another video-focused platform.

Twitter launches ‘Circles’ feature to keep tweets private

While Twitter is known to be a platform for people to share their unfiltered views, it surely has landed many known and unknown people in trouble for the same reason. While the primarily text-based social media platform allows people to share their views it has a few limitations that the competing platforms possess. While Instagram has close friends and edit post options, Twitter had no such option. Well, that was only till now, as Twitter has recently launched the Twitter Circles feature which allows users to share their tweets with a specified group of people.

The idea behind Twitter Circle is that one might not want to share their tweets with all of their friends, family, and colleagues. While one friend group of yours might enjoy a controversial take on a mainstream movie, others might not. Hence, Twitter Circles allows your views to be restricted to one set of people. The social media platform started testing the feature back in May, however, the Twitter Circle is now available to everyone.

The Circle is quite similar to Instagram’s ‘Close Friends’ feature which allows you to share posts with a small group of people. On Twitter, users can add up to 150 people to your ‘Circle’. People you add to your Circle do not need to follow you, hence, if you want to tweet something specifically tailored for Harry Styles or Lizzo fans, you’ll be able to do it!

How to add Twitter Circle

Users will be able to share a Twitter Circle tweet when they open the Tweet composer.

  1. Select the ‘Choose Audience’ option within the Tweet composer.
  2. Select ‘Edit’ next to the Twitter Circle option
  3. Search and select the people you want in the circle (People can also be selected from the recommended list)
  4. Click ‘X’ and continue typing the tweet

Once the Twitter Circle is added, users have the option to choose between the audience of ‘Everyone’ or ‘Twitter Circle’. Users need to know that the Circle tweets cannot be retweeted as they are restricted to a limited audience. As of now, Twitter is also testing the ‘Edit’ post option.

OnePlus 10T – First Impressions and Hands-On Review

OnePlus is releasing its new flagship, the OnePlus 10T. OnePlus was once known as the value brand, but their phone costs were soaring thanks to recent partnerships. This time, they’ve dropped the price on the OnePlus 10T and seem nostalgic. Here is our first impression of this new flagship offering from OnePlus.

Design

The OnePlus 10T follows the same burdenless, unified, and stylish design language as the OnePlus 10 Pro, complete with a unibody rear glass cover made with industry-leading technology. The OnePlus 10T is available in Moonstone Black and Jade Green colourways. The smooth glass delivers a ceramic-like finish that looks and feels premium. The significant difference in design between the 10Pro and 10T is the exclusion of an alert slider in the latter. The display has no curvature and is flat like the OnePlus phones of the past.

Display

The OnePlus 10T has a 6.7-inch FHD+ HDR 10+ AMOLED display, a 120 Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 950 nits. The OnePlus 10T’s display has an adaptive refresh rate, meaning it can adjust between 120 Hz, 90 Hz, and 60 Hz depending on the content consumed to save battery life. Both 10Pro and 10T’s display has native support for 10-bit colour depth, delivering richer and more realistic colours with better detail reproduction. But, the 10T display is not curved on its side and presents a flat design, a more acceptable approach. It also misses out on the 1440p LTPO display without compromising on the display quality.

OnePlus 10T

Battery

OnePlus touts the complementary high-wattage accessory and 4,800mAh 10T battery capable of superior stability, reliability and thermal control, thanks to new OPPO charging technology. SuperVOOC charger allows 150W charging from the 160W charger inside the box. Unlike the Pro series, this one misses out on wireless charging, but the ultra-fast charger does compensate. 0-100% charge in less than 20 minutes!

Processor

To recall, the OnePlus 10 Pro featured the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and was already a potent but costly device. The new processor – Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 – powering the OnePlus 10T 5G provides 10 per cent better CPU performance and 30 per cent improved power efficiency over its predecessor. And gamers will be pleased to know that there’s a 10 per cent increase in GPU clock speeds and a 30 per cent reduction in GPU power consumption.

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset is paired with up to 256GB of internal storage and up to 16GB of DDR5 RAM. The two-lane UFS 3.1 storage brings significantly faster write speeds into the picture, leading to a drop in power consumption levels. The 10T processor is a definite upgrade over the 10Pro.

Additional features

OnePlus 10T comes with the in-built Zen Mode app created by the One-Plus community to help users break away from their device and concentrate on other tasks without the constant distraction of the subsequent notification, ping or ring. It acts like a meditation app, and you can set a timer for how long you want the Zen Mode to go on, and you are complimented with meditation songs.

Camera

Talking about the camera, the OnePlus 10T has a 50MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide, and 2MP macro sensor, with a 16MP camera in the front. 10Pro has a Hasselblad colour science 48MP primary camera with a 32 MP front camera, so 10Pro goes heavy in camera. We captured the images from both these phones, and the 10T performs like most upper mid-range phones with its primary Sony IMX766 sensor, the same found in Nothing Phone (1). The colours are decent but lack the Hasselblad post-processing, a boon in some lighting conditions.

OnePlus 10T

The phone is equipped with OnePlus’s largest and most advanced cooling system. HyperBoost Gaming Engine will aid gamers in getting the best gaming experience on current OnePlus devices. Priced sanely starting at 50k INR with top-tier SOC, super-fast charging, decent cameras, and an attractive design, the OnePlus 10T seems like a thoughtful approach from OnePlus to gain back its lost audience.

Instagram removed Standalone apps, Boomerang and Hyperlapse from Play Store and App Store

Technology can indeed be regarded as the marvel of the 21st century. The dynamic pace at which technology is becoming obsolete and replaced by new technology is commendable. Today, the way people connect and communicate clearly elucidates the fact that communication technology has evolved drastically.

Back in 2006, when Facebook was officially launched in India, it immediately replaced the then social media applications like Orkut. Facebook, followed by WhatsApp and then Instagram, has clearly revolutionized the segment of personal communication. Instagram undeniably is the bearer of the limelight. It allows its users to click pictures, followed by various filters to edit the picture and upload on the same platform.

Two of the most recognized filters of the gram are hyperlapse and boomerang, which are now removed from the apple and google play stores. The primary question that arises is why these filters are removed despite being so much in demand. The answer is that the feature of these applications is being integrated into Instagram itself, thus eliminating the need for standalone applications.

One of the key advantages of integrating these filters in Instagram is that it eases the use. Instead of using two separate applications, one application comes in handy. Second, Instagram possesses more downloads and usage than these two applications combined, thus increasing the more frequent use of these filters. Third, it helps in mainstreaming the images on one platform and hence is eases the hassle of saving images separately on a different application.

How Apps Like Instagram and TikTok Created Online Superstars

Gone are the days when fans would fill their room with posters of Shah Rukh Khan, or girls writing letters to Rajesh Khanna with their blood, or people just resorting to any level of insanity to meet their icons. The euphoria around a star has watered down. Now, we have online superstars.

Today, almost every actor is omnipresent; they are in our bedrooms, dinner tables, workspaces, and bathrooms(well, not quite literally). The ‘I wonder’ factor of the actors that we once frowned upon went in absolute absentia when their daily-life updates got conveniently displayed on our smartphones. We became aware that these superstars, whom we considered Demi-Gods, sit, walk, and talk like us.

It feels like yesterday when everyone was just too invested in Vines, and Dubsmash, a lip-syncing platform, gave birth to a new generation of content creators. And boom! There was TikTok. The lip-sync platform magnetized the whole of Generation-Z in creating feature skits and dance videos lasting for 15 seconds.

Today everyone has become fair game, with the rise of new products germinating around the contemporary cultural landscape – the social media influencers.

This relationship of the rising generation with these creative platforms is very telling of what they stand for. Across different socio-economic backgrounds, the present generation reject prejudices, stereotypes and gender-norms, and practice identity expressions with pragmatism. They are open to changes and are much more aware of the world around them.

What I have noticed being on social media for a while is that while millennials prefer consuming feeds, it is the Gen-Z who are more actively creating the content.

15 Seconds of Fame

Tik-Tok introduced the concept of showing your creativity in 15 seconds, and the world went bananas. Why should I wait for a film so eagerly if I could conveniently swipe through raw and more authentic short videos of people who look like you and me?

A while back, a man from rural India, who lives in a small hut with his wife and other family members, went viral for his extraordinary dance moves. This story is just a wave in an ocean of opportunities that these ‘nobodies have been provided through this platform. The thing is, you never know what clicks among the audience until one day you turn your life upside down with millions of followers.

TikTok’s ‘cringe-including’ content is a potential meme material for Internet inhabitants, but it is a source of liberation and a confidence booster for millions of users. So mocking TikTok is alright and quite fashionable, but dismissing the platform is just plain foolish.

When TikTok got banned in India due to the rising tension between India and China, Instagram saw an opportunity there and cloned the concept in their Reels that now allows you to create content over up to a minute.

Cashing it Out

Instagram and TikTok have enabled everyone to be a creator. You don’t need high-end equipment anymore to bring your creativity out in front of the lens. You might be an actor, artist, dancer, doctor, financial advisor, student, or anything under the sun; you could be a star on Tik-Tok if you know the art of connecting with the audience.

I will be lying if I say I do not get covetous of the influencer’s ability to produce easy money through brands and advertisements while I work my ass off to afford the basic necessities. But there’s no hate here; infact, there’s a sense of understanding that they are moulding themselves to what today’s ‘social media generation’ needs, while individuals like are satisfied with just consuming or disdaining it.

The present generation has lost a sense of attentiveness when it comes to consuming content. The attention span has seemingly gone down with the introduction of the Internet. We now want to jump from one content to another without even trying to find any sense in what we have just watched. We do not know what it is to wait and think about what we just witnessed. In a sense, we are leeches in a human skull, which are harmless to none but to our own intelligence.

Now coming back to the content creators, have you ever wondered how much do influencers earn? These influencers can be 17 years old or can go up to 50, but their pay is directly related to their number of followers. Depending on the followers and their niche, they can charge from Rs 15,000 to over a lakh for a post. Moreover, a lot of people pay them for collaborations and appearances. I kid you not; there was a whole reality show on some streaming platform based on these social influencers’ lives. Such is the height of success, they get to taste.

Brands have understood that in order to connect directly with their customers, they need to give up the traditional way of advertising their products through television and instead use the tool of social media, which is much more convenient and cost-friendly.

Conclusion

It doesn’t matter whether you hate the content or love to make or consume it, you cannot ignore the fact that platforms like Instagram, Youtube, TikTok have given a chance to young minds from all nooks and corners of the world to make a universe for their own self and get to be a hero in it. Isn’t that all we want deep inside or something we dream of with our eyes wide open?

Here’s what social media is doing to the present generation.
