Asus Zenbook S14 Review: Elegance Meets Efficiency

The Asus Zenbook S14 is a premium ultraportable laptop designed for everyday tasks, productivity, light creative work, and AI features. The UX5406 series, especially with the Intel Core Ultra 9 386H, targets professionals who want a portable Windows device that prioritizes design, display quality, and all-day usability over gaming performance. But is this the best laptop you can buy right now? Let’s find out.

    Design & Build

Asus has refined the Zenbook formula with its proprietary Ceraluminum material on the lid. This ceramic-aluminium hybrid aims for the lightness of aluminium with greater hardness, scratch resistance, and a distinctive textured finish inspired by natural elements. Available in colours such as Antrim Grey (the one we are reviewing) or Scandinavian White, the chassis feels premium and rigid despite its extreme thinness. The unibody construction and CNC machining create a solid, high-end feel that resists flex well for such a light device.

At just 1.2 kg and approximately 1.1–1.3 cm thick, it slips easily into bags and is comfortable for extended lap use or travel. The design incorporates a geometric grille for cooling that doubles as a visual accent. Ports are practical for an ultraportable, including two Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports that support data, display, and power delivery, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, HDMI 2.1, and a 3.5 mm combo audio jack. This reduces the need for dongles compared with many thin laptops that omit USB-A or HDMI.

The keyboard offers solid key travel and tactile feedback for a slim chassis, with a spacious layout and backlight. The touchpad is responsive, supports gestures well, and features an anti-fingerprint coating. An FHD IR webcam enables Windows Hello facial recognition. Overall build quality is a clear strength; premium materials and thoughtful details make it feel like a flagship rather than a compromised thin laptop.

The 14-inch 3K OLED display is a highlight. It delivers a sharp 2880 × 1800 resolution (roughly 243 ppi) in a 16:10 aspect ratio, paired with a 120 Hz refresh rate and very fast 0.2 ms response times. Colours are vibrant with full DCI-P3 coverage, deep blacks, high contrast, and peak brightness. Touch input is available and proved responsive in use, making it convenient for quick navigation, annotation, or casual creative work. The glossy finish enhances the OLED’s visual pop but can pick up reflections in bright environments. Four speakers (often Harman Kardon tuned with Dolby Atmos support) deliver surprisingly full, clear audio for a thin laptop, suitable for media and calls.

    Performance

This configuration pairs the Intel Core Ultra 9 386H (a Series 3 / Panther Lake processor with 16 cores, typically 4 performance, 8 efficiency, and 4 low-power efficiency cores, boosting up to around 4.9 GHz) with 32 GB of fast onboard LPDDR5X memory and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. An integrated NPU delivering up to 50 TOPS enables Copilot+ AI features such as enhanced Windows Studio Effects, Live Captions, and generative tools. Graphics are handled by Intel’s integrated solution, which is capable of everyday tasks, media, light photo/video editing, and casual gaming at reduced settings but is not a discrete-GPU replacement.

In real-world use, the system feels snappy for productivity: multitasking across browsers, Office apps, multiple windows, video calls, and light creative work is smooth thanks to the ample RAM and responsive storage. The SSD delivers strong sequential speeds typical of modern NVMe drives. AI-accelerated features benefit from the NPU. For more demanding multi-core workloads or intensive content creation, the performance is strong for an efficiency-focused ultraportable. However, sustained high loads may be limited by the thin chassis’s thermal and power envelope.

One notable observation is its thermal behaviour: the laptop heated up even during basic browsing. While Asus equips it with dual fans, an enlarged vapour chamber, graphite sheets, and geometric exhaust design aimed at quiet, efficient cooling, the ultra-slim profile means heat can still become noticeable on the chassis or keyboard deck under prolonged use. Fans generally stay controlled, and noise remains low for most everyday scenarios, but users sensitive to warmth may notice it more than on thicker machines.

    Battery

Battery life is decent and aligns with class expectations for a modern, efficient ultraportable. The 77 Wh battery (up from earlier 72 Wh variants in the series), combined with the power-efficient Core Ultra platform, supports all-day use for mixed productivity, browsing, and media. Official claims reach as high as 27 hours in idealized video playback scenarios; real-world mixed use typically lands in a more practical, still strong range that covers a full workday with margin, depending on brightness, workload, and settings. Fast charging via USB-C is convenient.

    VERDICT

    9.0 Elegance Meets Efficiency

The Asus Zenbook S14, featuring a Core Ultra 9 386H, 32 GB RAM, and 1 TB storage, is a premium ultraportable laptop that excels in design and performance. Its sleek Ceraluminum build and sharp OLED touchscreen make it ideal for professionals and mobile users. While it offers capable everyday performance and solid battery life, it does have some drawbacks, including heat build-up, limited integrated graphics, fixed RAM and storage, and a competitive price point. Overall, it stands out for those prioritizing Windows compatibility, portability under 1.3 kg, and a refined experience, making it a tempting choice for professionals who need a beautiful, efficient daily driver.
