Samsung Z Fold4 (Review) – A foldable’s London expedition

If you are holding the Galaxy Z Fold3 in your hand, you might be convinced that upgrading to the Z Fold4 might not be required by the end of this review. It’s lighter, the camera is bumped up, and the hinged mechanism is more refined and well-integrated. There is no comparison that can be thrown in since it’s a segment blurring the lines between a tablet and a smartphone. The whole gist of this version of the Z Fold – Lots of things are a little nicer; nothing is radically better.

Take, for instance, the screens; the hinge and bezels are a little smaller than on the Fold3, making the 6.2-inch cover screen more operationally practical. It has a 2316 x 904 resolution and a 23.1:9 aspect ratio – a little wider than the Fold 3’s 2268 x 832 display with a 24.5:9 ratio. Texting and typing on the keyboard require a lot more concentration, and if I kept hitting the wrong keys, I would blame my wider thumb.

The main screen still measures 7.6 inches like last year’s, now with a 2176 x 1812 resolution and 21.6:18 aspect ratio compared to 2208 x 1768 and 22.5:18. The screen is humongous from smartphone standards, and a slight shift in aspect ratio really doesn’t make any big difference. All the screens (inner & outer) offer up to 120Hz refresh rates, so scrolling is very smooth and refined.

The ZFold 4 has a 4400mAh battery and lasts a whole day easily with heavy usage, but more than a day is asking for trouble. There’s no change to wired charging speeds at 25W, but wireless charging has been fastened at 15W versus 11W. There is a small catch though you will have to use Samsung’s own fast wireless chargers. To be honest, for a serious multitasking folding phone, this is the only game in town and is a unique proposition.

Powering the Galaxy Z Fold 4 across all regions is Qualcomm’s new 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset. There isn’t a version of the device with an Exynos alternative, a change from Samsung’s release strategy with S-series phones, and that’s a good thing. Gorilla glass Victus+ and 18% stronger flexible glass are welcome additions.

Overall, the phone has 5 cameras with an in-display 4MP camera as well, but the main 50MP camera has innate capabilities both during day and night. The 12MP Ultrawide sensor and 10MP telephoto, this time with OIS like the primary camera, bring 3x optical and 30x digital zoom. The improved camera algorithms similar to something named Ultra at the end brings improved camera performance in all lighting conditions.

One UI running on 12GB DDR5 RAM based on Android 12L brings software enhancements like no other phone. While operating, what is intuitive is a desktop-style taskbar that stacks up all the most commonly used apps and sits at the bottom of the screen. It can also be pulled up when you’re in other apps, allowing you to open multiple apps simultaneously without jumping back to the home screen.

Weight-wise, it’s not too bulky; though it looks like a heavier gadget, it still holds a brag factor at the dinner table, and you will always proudly keep it in the centre of everyone’s attention. If you’ve been sitting on the bench and waiting to dive into the fold revolution, then it’s a good time to do that with the ZFold4, or maybe wait for it to come out with another iteration and hopefully with a wider screen for ease of typing without folding out. It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted, and plonking down Rs 1,54,999/- means you are already living a life!

Game On! – It’s time to play games seriously

On one side, Samsung unfolded Galaxy Z Fold4 and flipped the Galaxy Z Flip4 pushing the boundaries for folding screens with precise hinge engineering. On the other side, Cupertino has been busy with incremental developments and raising the bar with safety features with the next generation of Apple devices. Every brand plays its own game, and the rules are changing fast. The ‘ecosystem’ will be the future as brands like Oneplus, Vivo and Oppo are taking inspiration from Apple while having their own gameplay. The Gaming special issue features How Big is Grand Theft Auto? I hope you’re aware that developers spent a massive budget of $265 million in developing GTA V, and it earned $1 billion in its first three days on the shelves, which means it’s time to play games seriously. Now digest this: the global online gaming market generated  approximately $26 billion dollars in revenues in 2022.

Games aside, Apple unveiled their iPhone 14 lineup with no foldable screen, no fingerprint sensor, and no groundbreaking design, but under the hood, they have put more power and some unthought-of features. Along with iPhones, the other notable launches were Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. Cellular International Roaming in the Watch Series 8 to start along with crash detection [up to 256G] with the help of new sensors of accelerometers and gyroscopes. It’s also going to measure your stride and can take your ECG.

Apple Watch Ultra is the real game changer as it features Aerospace grade titanium, 49 mm flat sapphire glass, and three speakers that should make talking and hearing crisper. It has an orange customisable action button and up to 36 hours of battery. Also, it has a siren feature, which can be heard up to 600 feet, throwing a challenge to the Garmins of the world. Apple iPhone 14 has SOS via satellite which will be free for 1st two years, and no idea if available in India, as it is currently offered only in USA & Canada. However, the idea of connecting via satellite through SMS in no-network areas is novel. Some folks at Cupertino had gone for a cross-Atlantic expedition to throw in all such features. Once again, the Pro devices’ cameras have been improved radically with the A16 Bionic chip, the fastest available today. Also, it has an Alwayson display and dynamic island on the notch, which will not irritate you with notifications while doing other things.

Samsung, on the other hand, with its new generation of Fold & Flip, Watch5, and Buds, are the best in case you want to remain in the premium range of the Android ecosystem. The irony is that Apple & Samsung do not allow each other’s products to communicate freely, and it’s more of an ecosystem you will have to buy into. Even if I love the Galaxy Watch5 design, I cannot have it paired with my iPhone, and that is the biggest game that the tech giants are playing today.

Until the time comes again

We have completed 75 years of independence from the British,
and as History repeats itself, some countries are again out to
make colonies and extend their land territory. Look around
Russia, which has been fighting a war with Ukraine for the last
several months and has disrupted the global economy. China
is making unpleasant moves over Taiwan; Israel and Palestine
can never stop bombing each other. The geopolitical and arms
race is again beginning, and humans will never change. For
centuries the folks sitting in power get restless and to massage
their false ego or leave behind a “Great Emperor” tag, or the
“most powerful president” will do stupid things in some garb or
other. Isn’t there much to already figure – Inflation, economy
Covid etc.? Can’t the world leaders have a common goal of
peaceful existence? Imagine if the world didn’t have to spend
trillions of dollars on those fighter jets, missiles and warships.
There would be so much money available for the welfare of
humankind. Maybe with that much money, we could do more
research on space tourism or find other species in the solar
system. James Webb’s Telescope is one example of what is
possible, and the first big reveal was Webb’s first deep field, an
image of thousands of galaxies 4.6 billion light years away. This
is the farthest into our universe we’ve ever seen, read the whole
story on.
Geopolitical disturbances and with so many nuclear weapons
available, we are just a trigger away from getting wiped out.
Is it all worth it? Today Pakistan is on the verge of bankruptcy
because its defense spending is way higher than economic
development projects. An actual Independence day of the world
will be when as a race, we stop weaponizing ourselves to a level
that there are more bullets than grains available. And adding to
it, there is a global food grain shortage in the world along with
semiconductors, but no dearth of bullets and missiles.
We have listed 75 gadgets that have changed how we live and
significantly impacted our daily lives. They are timeless, and just
like History repeats itself, pondering over these inventions will
give you a sense of timelessness. How simple inventions have
saved so much of our time and time, which is the only commodity
which can’t be replenished? And sticking to the time subject – did
you know all the Apple devices show the time 9:42 across various
commercials, print ads, and even on their website, as that’s the
morning when Steve Jobs announced the very first iPhone in
2007? Almost similar to this, all the Rolex watches are set to ten
past ten with the second hand at 31 seconds to get the aesthetic
look. Also, the date is always set to the 28th, and the day is
always set to Monday. We have dug deep into timepieces and
picked up Rolex in our ‘How Big Is’ section.
In other trivia, did you know It takes Earth 23 hours, 56 minutes
and 4.091 seconds to finish the one rotation so that the sun
appears in the same position in the sky? Yeah, we have been
fooled since school days. You can do a lot in those 3 minutes and
56 seconds. Just like this Editorial piece would have taken you
that much time to come here.
Until the time comes again,
Stay tuned for all that is happening on exhibit.tech and watch
our video reviews on the exhibit youtube channel, which now has

Enjoy the Monsoon

Last month was one of the most adventurous months of my life when I went on a road trip from Los Angeles to Mexico; yes, you read it right, MEXICO!

I was a little hesitant when I picked up this location, but they said, “if the partner is up to the mark then you don’t have to worry” for the unchartered territory ahead, Jeep Wrangler Rubicon gave me company and gobbled over 1000+ km in a three-day trip… This was not the end of my road-tripping. Immediately after the US, I went to UAE and was welcomed by the McLaren 720S Spider for another three days. On both the trips, I only had one issue: the Tech, Wrangler has a relatively smaller infotainment console with a smaller display, so watching navigation is a little troublesome, especially when you are driving in foreign locations at high speeds where every turn is essential. McLaren 720S Spider, with all its power and performance figures, did not have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, that’s an option you have to buy separately, and the car I drove, unfortunately, did not have it. Driving around Dubai with my smartphone in one hand was a nightmare since built-in navigation is always outdated as the city changes so fast. Finally, I had to buy a smartphone holder and mount my smartphone to make my life easier. Just like uber drivers do, in my case, it was the McLaren.

This year, rain gods are showering more love than anticipated. Monsoons and music are a match made in heaven. The temperatures are soothing, and people spend valuable time consuming their favourite tunes stuck in long traffic hours or enjoying the serene backdrop of rain. In this edition, we celebrate music. Have you ever wondered how big is the Indian music industry? Read along as we explain what different music genres mean and how music affects your brain and mental health. Music and rains have existed since times unknown. Music may be beyond language, while some languages weirdly sound like music. Did you know that music doubles as therapy? Wondering where to head this monsoon, read our top picks for a spectacular monsoon destination right here in India.

The evolution of rap music, an ancient musical art form, is just as fascinating as rap song lyrics. Music is heard in nature and manufactured marvels. We list the most awesome-sounding car exhausts and expensive audio systems that cater to the richest of the world. We also have premium sound systems in cars, costing as much as regular cars! Adhering to the theme, we also mention some classic monsoon playlists. And, if you thought music was all, get ready to feel puny as we dive into the vastness of space. James Webb Space Telescope is our new pair of eyes exploring space as we’ve never seen before. From the vastness to the nothingness of Nothing, a new tech company with new products seems promising. My team tests Acer Aspire 5, Asus Tuf Dash 15 and MSI’s gaming laptops alongside the popular Nord 2T, Poco F4, a successor to the fan-favourite F1 and OnePlus 10R. Did I mention the wearable purifier, a crazy innovation
from LG?

The world also lost Leonardo Del Vecchio, the man behind almost every popular sunglasses brand. A tribute to the businessman with shady ideas. From Bombay, Baarish and Bollywood to the merger of two Japanese giants, Sony and Honda, to make electric vehicles, this monsoon enjoy a diverse musical edition and happy monsoon to one
and all. Enjoy the Monsoon!

The Viral Issue Of The Year!

Three years ago, when we had put together Influencex Awards for the first time, we were prepared, just not enough to be overwhelmed. Our site crashed when we witnessed voting on pandemic levels. That’s when we realised the power of “Influencer marketing”. It was the first award recognising them, and all the biggest names in the business – Bhuvan Bam, Prajakta Koli, Ashish Chanchlani, Gaurav Taneja, Mumbiker Nikhil, etc. who were few of the attendees. Since it was held in Mumbai, it also made it easy for everyone to come together, and it was one big success turned awards party. Then the real pandemic hit us, and we had to do virtual awards, which was fun but not as engaging. And now, in 2022, with Influencex 3.0, we want to step on the gas and raise the bar. In association with Kerala tourism, we took 100 + creators to Kovalam, a beautiful city in Kerala, over two-day excursions and the awards night. Despite scaling up bandwidth, the voting site still crashed; we registered 740,000 votes in 15 days. The venue- Leela by Raviz, where we hosted the event used to get frantic calls from the fans of these content creators checking out the awards and wanting to gatecrash and meet their idols.

From any imagination to host 100 people, leave aside the fact that they are the most prominent content creators, pseudo-celebrities in their fields coming from every part of the country, most with their plus one will be a challenge. My team had braced themselves with sleepless nights, and we knew that it was a live event where all 100 cameras were rolling simultaneously and capturing every moment. We would be ridiculed if our hospitality shook, but victory loves preparation. We shook the Instagram nation, and the night was epic, so much that we had to shut the party down. Our brief for dress code was to be casually dressed [beach wear], but everybody had dressed for the prom night, and it was nothing less than a met gala. Later I realised that these content creators valued this so much and wanted to dress up for the occasion since it is their recognition.

Thank god we had shifted the venue from the beach to the ballroom as weather reports predicted a cyclone. Instead, mayhem happened –  digital devastation, which made the #influencex22 trend for 48 hours. In fact, we have claimed # as our trophy for the awards, which itself is like owning the crown. With 100 top content creators who have been publicly voted, 40 categories of awards,100+ cumulative following on the gram and over 97 lakh subscribers on youtube. It was a powerful gathering that could get anything trended, mocked, and hailed! The Power of influencers, the power of influencex! It would be challenging to get anyone to wake up and go to Kovalam for excursions after a night of celebrations with cocktails and the Aattam Kalasamithi & Chemmeen Band, which played their instruments, created a trance-like vibe taking the spirits high. But everyone was excited to share time and memories with their audience, some had not slept, and the whole group ventured out in Kovalam together to explore Kerala, god’s own country. It’s the #classsof2022 we are talking about, but our eyes are already glued to make #classof2023 more epic!

WHERE IS THE INVENTION & INNOVATION?

When was the last time you were enthralled with any new tech innovation? Are all the problems solved yet? Let’s Airbnb, let’s Uber it, let’s google it, what’s next? Indeed Cryptocurrencies and NFTs are all good, but they are not really solving any significant problems. When did the last excellent smartphone innovation happen? Flip phones and fold phones – yes, different form factors and promising but this Invention I saw several years back at the CES. When the new iPhones are announced, the upgrades are minimalistic so much that if you have an iPhone 12 series and unless you want a flaunt factor, there is no real need for an upgrade to the iPhone 13. Android smartphones from Samsung, Vivo, and Oppo, Oneplus make changes mostly around camera, RAM & resolution upgrades and maybe some surface material improvements. Is anyone really thinking about profound inventions? Something like a smartphone that doesn’t need to charge for 30 days is a good starting point or a solar-powered one.

Robotics innovation though promising has not pushed the boundaries and really can’t do much more than dance and get a can of coke. What about medical innovation? A deadly virus like Covid can paralyse the whole world and suck everything out of us; what were the world scientists doing. The last time the deadliest invention happened was when nuclear bombs were invented, which resulted in giving destructive powers to heads of state to bring the countries to an end. What if Vladimir Putin loses it entirely and does a nuclear strike on Ukraine, whose only fault is that it gave up its nuclear arsenal and doesn’t possess those weapons of mass destruction, to have a counterthreat ready. Where is the invention which can save the world from an accidental nuclear explosion? Are we really working on it or waiting for another pandemic type phenomenon.

The dark web and digital currency are both a reality. A parallel universe exists in the dark web even before we got acquainted with Meta Verse. Oculus VR, invented by Palmer Luckey, which Facebook later acquired, has opened a string of norms where Digital land, digital avatars, and all sorts of virtual-real world thighs are happening, so much so that Facebook changed its name to Meta. Just like bitcoin in 2008 made cryptocurrency a reality and opened the flood gates of the token and NFT industry. But it’s 2022 and in the last decade, nothing which can change the world for good and make living more beautiful has come out. It’s symbolic that iPod has taken a bow giving way to the streaming industry, and storing music is historical. As long as it progresses, technological changes are good. Just like iPod did its job and changed the way music was consumed, we need technological breakthroughs that can change a lot of things, make the air we breathe better again, keep check on global warming and provide drinkable water to all. Just the basic things we need!

Fact is our truth is more fascinating than fantasies!

This has been a happening month! My team had a tech-savvy time reviewing products with the best phone launches, from Samsung, OnePlus, iQOO, Realme, etc., to excellent new laptops. Technology has witnessed RTX graphics in an Acer thin and light Swift X. Speaking of multiple phones, phone companies have lost it. The first quarter of the year has already confused smartphone buyers with the number of launches. They’re almost uncountable! Speaking of all the phones, we also explored the return of colours in smartphones. Who doesn’t like a little colour in their lives? A new aspect of the world is emerging in the form of NFTs. Knowledge is wasted if not shared.

Our cover features the gorgeous and brilliant Miss World 2017, Manushi Chillar, debuting in Prithviraj, opposite Akshay Kumar this June. We wish her all the best. Our team also conversed with someone I have known for a long time, an automotive social media influencer, Mumbiker Nikhil, and his passion turned profession. Talking about influencing, our Influencex – Indias’ first Influencer awards are in its 3rd season, and voting has just begun if you see the exhibit.tech/voting tripping it’s because of the insane fans coming and voting for their favourite across the 40 categories that we stack them on. It all concludes with 100 of the Top Influencers flying with us in Kerala to celebrate the best of the best content creators in India.

7-Course Meal with Volvo XC90 ft. MasterChef Shipra Khanna

Europeans are always obsessed with the cars they make and the food they eat. Europeans are always obsessed with the cars they make and the food they eat. They always fulfil the quest of hunger of the gourmet and never fail to impress an auto enthusiast with its overall product offering. One such Swedish car accompanying is Volvo, and its latest offering is the flagship 7- seater luxury SUV – 2022 XC90. Just to spice things up, we invited Master chef Shipra Khanna on a 7-course meal to discuss a luxury palette and the luxury SUV over a hearty meal.

Shipra Khanna is one of the most glamorous Master chef from Shimla. Apart from making delicious food, she is also an author, TV Host, content creator and food consultant. She has achieved the milestone of earning the tag of “Youngest Female Celebrity Chef in India” and knows what goes inside to make great dishes. Along with Volvo XC90, we have come up here in the majestic and exclusive farmhouse restaurant, Saltt, a 2-hour drive from our suburban Mumbai. Well, if you own a chopper, you can land up directly here because this place also has an exclusive helipad. Still, we preferred the XC90. The drive is always more fun if the destination, company, and conversations are exciting.

The 2-litre mild-hybrid petrol-powered Volvo XC90 is an ideal choice for such weekend gateways. Whoever owns this car wears a badge of honour and respect in society. It is targeted and Built for an ambitious individual with an appetite for success and a taste for luxury. It is not just about simpler and sophisticated looks or the best family haulier; Volvo XC90 is way more than that. It is equipped with tons of mind-blowing features and unique characteristics. We are on our quest to taste the 7-course meal where the Master chef will talk about the dishes, and Editor-in-chief will throw lights on the Volvo XC90. Both experts in their own fields.

1st Course – Lets Soup it

On the Bowl: Minestrone Milanese Soup

Shipra: It’s the safest thing to start your meal and to warm up your system. Hearty root vegetable and tomato flavoured thick soup with pesto, Parmigiano and pasta. A good Soup acts like engine oil and gets you a good start that you need for the 7-course meal coming forward.

RS: Since it’s on safety, Volvo has always been known for providing its safety masala in the beautiful dish – we call it car. With best-in-class safety ratings, Volvo XC90 also gets an intelligent Driver assistance System that detects and helps drivers to avoid a collision with other motorists and pedestrians on the road. The car is smart enough to detect any danger on the road; the brakes are applied automatically without thus avoiding mishaps and further damage. Cool, isn’t it? It also gets a 360-degree camera, a blind spot Information System, and lane keeps assist features to keep you all safe and secure while travelling. Just like this Soup, it’s as safe as a car can get.

2nd Course – Lets get Healthy!

On the Bowl: Goat Cheese Ball, Rocket and Citrus Salad

Shipra: What we have now is the second course meal, which is a fresh garden salad. Freshly cooked vegetables are always good for your health. It has got a lot of antioxidants, and we have got proteins in the form of cheese. The salad also contains a lot of essential fibres and iron that are always good for health. Most importantly, it has got orange vinegar, which acts as a palate cleanser. It is one of the most exciting courses because it has got a different medley of flavours.

RS: Talking about health, Volvo has made the environment cleaner and healthier by providing a hybrid engine option in this vehicle. Not only this, but the brand has also committed to putting one million electrified cars on the road by 2025. Such initiatives make a great impact on decreasing the pollution level in the atmosphere. By the way, did I tell you that this Volvo xc 90 comes with an air-purifier system that filters the polluted air and allows its occupants to breathe clean and healthy air inside? It gets a synthetic fibre-based filter and ionization, which kelps the cabin up to 95 per cent healthier by filtering out PM 2.5 particles inside the cabin.

3rd Course – Lets make an appetite for the Appetizer

On the Bowl: Avocado and Goat Cheese on House Sour Dough Toast.

Shipra: This is the third Course. It’s an appetizer. The idea for an appetizer is to build an appetite or rather space for the Main Course. And this is Avocado on the Sovada Bread.

RS: Talking about the space, the boot space comes as an extreme necessity to carry all your baggage for long road-trip journeys. Despite being a 7-seater, the car has an expansive 397 litre of boot space to gulp your entire essential luggage.

4th Course – Lets dig on to Mains

On the Bowl: Parmigiana Eggplant Vol-Au-Vent

Shipra: This is the French dish – Vol-Au-Vent. It looks extremely beautiful on the outside. No Doubt. But on the inside, it is stuffed with vegetables, Primula Cheese, and many flavors.

RS: Most of our time will be dedicated to experiencing the main Course, just like the one will spend most of its time inside the cabin of the car. Volvo xc90 feels like a posh European coffee lounge. It has got matte natural grain wooden inlays with a chrome strip running across the dashboard with the premium Nappa leather everywhere you touch. Xc90 gets a big tablet-like infotainment system and a massive digital instrument cluster. XC90 seats are best in class with ventilated front seats with massage function and four-way electric lumbar support. One would not complain about rear seats as there is plenty of legroom and headroom on offer. This car, on the inside, cocoons you with its luxury offerings.

5th Course – Still on the Mains

On the Bowl: Tofu meal

Shipra: This is our fifth meal out of our 7-course meal. Tofu meal is actually a complete meal. It is a total powerhouse loaded with energy and performance.

RS: Performance always excites me, and talking about performance, the new Volvo XC90 is now BS6 updated and gets a 2.0-litre engine churning around 300hp and 420 Nm of torque which is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox powering all four wheels.

6th Course – Lets have some Desserts

On the Bowl: Vegan Berry Tart

Shipra: Vegan Berry Tart is the first of our desserts. The dish is made with almond flour, and it’s got chocolates and berries inside it, making it one of the classic desserts.
RS: Classic! That is precisely the perfect way to describe the Volvo XC90. Volvo cars are known because of their minimalistic and simple design language. All new chrome grille, a restyled lower fascia, reprofiled rear bumper and beautiful looking 20-inch alloy wheels make it look sharp and simple.

7th Course – Lets end with Chocolates

On the Bowl: Chocolate Mousse

Shipra: Finally, we are on the last Course of our 7-course meal, and this chocolate Mousse is the perfect way to end our meal. You see, a good dessert is something that will give you a great aftertaste.

RS: You are spot on Shipra. The aftertaste is of great importance, and Volvo understands this very well. One can feel relaxed and totally accomplished if the external factors of owning a luxury car, such as after-sales service and warranty, are completely sorted. Volvo has come up with the scheme wherein it promises a lifetime warranty on the spare parts purchased from its authorized dealers. It is the first time in India that such an initiative has been offered to luxury customers. The company also cares about its customers by providing them with an interest-free monthly EMI for the service cost. Thus one can enjoy maximum coverage without having to worry about the cost. The car also comes with two year/unlimited-kilometre warranty. With around 29 dealers spread across pan India, Volvo provides a hassle-free and secure ownership experience.

Well, that was the 7-course meal with the Volvo XC90. Good food and a great car are 2-important factors in making any journey , destination or the journey of life beautiful. Isn’t it ?

The Exhibit Story | 16th Anniversary

We completed 16 years, and with that 16 years of my entrepreneurial journey, it’s time to tell you all a story –The Exhibit Story.

A little long but exciting and full of learnings that I thought should be shared. How to build a business with no funding, remain debt-free, how to grow at 25% year-on-year; some years even twice as much! I have lived the famous saying – “Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward” My first work experience was in junior college where I worked with the DSA of Standard Chartered bank during my break, selling credit cards. That’s when I realised that I can sell and sell anything. In two months, I had outperformed my team leader and was the top performer. I bought a motorbike (Suzuki Shogun) with my own money. That was a billion-dollar feeling. During my college days, I used to work with my father. It was insulting, and I never felt like the owner’s son. But that taught me a lot and almost pushed me to the point that I pledged not to work with him and went for the coveted MBA. I opted for the 1-year programme instead of the conventional 2 years from FORE School & Nottingham University UK; since I was in a hurry! Then, in my early 20s, the real work started. I worked a dream job at AP Fashions as an Export Manager and travelled to 10 countries in a single year, marketing fashion, selling to Versace, Calvin Klein etc. At the time of my interview, I still remember asking more questions than the person interviewing me, and at the end, I said I can only join if I got paid a certain amount, without even waiting to hear whether I was selected or not. Once at the UK airport, I saw a machine charging mobile phones. It was then that I contacted its manufacturer, who gave us a quote of 10,000 Pounds to export it to India. Soon, I cracked a deal with my college friend who had a factory, and we made the same machine for less than Rs 10,000. I still remember Vodafone had given us a cheque of Rs. 50,000 as advance and we did not had a bank account! Nevertheless, we sold 10,000 machines to Vodafone, Reliance and Airtel and installed them in malls and nightclubs across Calcutta. We charged them installation fees and agreed to have advertising banners on them since the machine was expensive and required maintenance. It was a customer convenience for them, and they all agreed, and we raked in huge profits. It was like we had opened a money pouring tap.

Learning #1: Idea Should be Win- Win:

The Idea should be win-win and tell them what they want to hear, not what you want to sell. With zero capital, we kicked off and took advances from big corporations [advances were new to their company policy]. We got down to basics and used smart complicated words to sell the products. For example, we would say we have smart circuitry and fast chargers which can charge in 15 minutes. It worked in our favour as instead of 15 minutes, and people used to charge for 5-6 minutes and then go back with enough for that last call.

Find opportunities and keep your ears open:

We went to Nokia and had a deal with them that we will use the Nokia chargers only, and Samsung and other brands will not be included. In those days, models were charger specific and did not have universal C-type ports. Nokia had 90% of the market share, they had the money, and the marketing head loved this idea. Again, we gave them bragging rights in the form of a simple competitive advantage. Before that, we offered Samsung the same, but no malls agreed since Nokia users were in plenty, so we flipped that as an opportunity and took it to Nokia.

Know when to exit:

We tried expanding our business in Delhi, Bangalore, etc. Still, soon competition caught up; the vendors simply ripped our straightforward machines and started making those machines at 1/3rd the price, which was the actual price. Of course, we could not compete and sell the same. We knew its a short game, so we decided to milk it and exit soon after, it was commoditised, and we left at the right time. Eventually, it died as charging cycles and portable chargers made their way.

Know your accounts or you are screwed!

My co-founder and I were terrible at accounts and had sales tax liabilities. Professional tax, income tax, anything you can imagine, and we had penalties, fines and a registered document reaching our premises every day. We were so naive or flushed with easy money that we used to import chargers from China through DHL and pay 15 times more which could otherwise come through LCL – loose cargo mode and save obnoxious amounts of money. But we were rolling in, at the same time spending and expanding (sometimes mindlessly.)

Birth of Exhibit – How it was conceived:

Soon after, we understood advertising and marketing as we had contacts with all mobiles and network operators. Hence, there was a Celebrating 16th Anniversary need for a tech magazine. We knew imports; we had connections in china to import fancy gadgets. We started Exhibit as a browse and buy magazine catalogue people could order from the pages, and we could deliver, though the quality was deplorable. We were sitting on money, and had to be in this space and try something new. In Calcutta, where we did all this, we were already one of the most successful self-funded startups, in a way. I still remember we had imported something called Dual-sim cards, which would convert regular phones into dual sim ones, and we sold thousands of those. Then there was something called the Bluetooth talking mirror which today is dated. All this was 12+ years ago.

Always Pivot and look for strategic partnership:

We realised we had to have our reach, and we could not print those in significant numbers, expect people to buy the magazine from the stands and buy products from it. So, we added more content, but we wanted a partnership that could give us exposure. I remember we chased Barista and convinced them to put an issue of Exhibit Magazine in all their 300 outlets, which gave us eyeballs of 3 lakh monthly . Immediately, all brand managers and stakeholders knew who we were. By sending 600 magazines, we gained 500 times eyeballs and a vast readership. Today, we also send complimentary copies to many salons and clinics, lounges, and coffee parlours.

The big picture missed:

Later on, we moved to the mainstream magazine, moved the catalogue sales, and started an e-commerce store called valuestore. in. Our competition was Rediff shopping and Indiatimes shopping. We were very early movers and helped shape the cash on delivery model. In Calcutta, there used to be something called Waybill. When a customer refused the products, it was a massive headache in the office. We had 1000s of customers who simply used to order and then decided not to accept. Waybill used to come from sales tax department and it was a nightmare system. We should have raised money at that point, we should have gone out of Calcutta at that point, we should have played large, but with the comforts of friends and family and no mentorship, we missed the big picture. Maybe we could have competed with Flipkart or Snapdeal; perhaps you never know. But we learned our lessons from experiences.

Follow your gut feel and look all set:

Meanwhile, we organized exhibitions like the Tech expo. This perhaps was the single biggest achievement. It was at The Park hotel. The stakes were relatively high four days before the expo. We only had 4 stalls booked and had 30 more to sell; it was a panic situation. I remember driving personally to a brand head in Calcutta and showing all the billboards [which we had taken on barter] that we had put up to emphasize that we were all set. He took the largest stall, and finally, we had every square inch sold out. Along with my team,  distributed pamphlets outside the park to get people to come inside the expo. At that point, stakes were very high, but the co- founder, a good friend of mine, and I had some differences, so we decided to split. He kept the e-commerce business, and I moved out with the Expo and magazine and had a deal for the next 2 years we both will not step into each other’s territory. In between, I started a power club, a discount card with all restaurants and entry into nightclubs and sold yearly memberships. We had 5000 members, which also did very well, and I had another friend who was a partner in this. It was a profitable business but not scalable, so I sold my share to my friend.

The Place matters:

When you want to play big, be in the right place. If you are not in Mumbai you won’t make a real mark in media and entertainment business. Keeping that in mind, I moved too Mumbai and never looked back eversince.

Failed Business and Projects:

Every failed project teaches you a lot. Now, looking at an idea that most of the time looks perfect with great potential is just not going to work. I had Co-founded Excess.in and invested a year with lots of my capital and time. It was an idea which was a B2B marketplace where brands owners and manufacturers could sell to the dealers directly, and retailers could sell their excess stock to each other. The website was created from the ground up, we had 100 people on feet who used to go to the retailers, but they will just not sign up. We realised it required a mindset change, and once again, we were too early for the business. Justbuylive – which my good friend Sahil had cofounded, raised and had put lots of money into – was the bigger version of that. I remember telling him before the start that this would not be easy to execute and on paper, it’s a multibillion-dollar idea.

I also started techykart.com e-commerce for technology gadgets but could not compete with Flipkart and Amazon’s steep discounting and had to shut it down.

Along with that started PhoneSpa, and we had 12 malls where we had set up physical kiosks in Mumbai and Delhi where you could walk in, take a picture and a mobile case would be printed and given to you. An app that could do the same for you. But the rentals and team just could not do it apart from the fact that we had to buy dyes for every SKU, and printing used to take 30 minutes. Lost money and shut shop after a year.

Had also launched the magazine in Poland, had a team through AIESEC who came to India to work for Exhibit. But we could not manage it and had to shut it down in 4 months. The team who had started there messed up, and the language barrier was tricky. We were also a brand consultancy business UNSTOPPABLE As a professional sports photographer, I have high expectations for my gear and am very picky when it comes to adding or changing it. And I was blown away when I got my hands on the Nikon Z 9. Its autofocus tracking and stickiness are unrivalled, and its 3D Tracking advancements feel light years ahead of the competition. MORE INFORMATION We were also a brand consultancy business for international tech brands entering India. Gear4 – a UK based Mobile accessories company launched in India through us. We handshake them with distributors and did their strategy like a few more companies.

Concentrate and stay focussed:

All these failed businesses and a few more that are not worth mentioning taught me many things that you only learn when you get your hands dirty, but also took a lot of my time. Then 6 years ago, I decided to focus and grow the IP and Exhibit Brand.

We started Exhibit Tech Awards, and the first awards were in Bangalore with Cebit, and it has been 7 years and has grown each year. Then we started Exhibit Startups which we have been doing for 6 years, which helped me satiate my thirst for new ventures. We have some great plans in this space in the years to come. Some of the startups who pitched at our events are almost billion-dollar companies like Haptik.

Then, the biggest was the Tech fashion Tour, which is also in its 6th year. I remember an interesting incident 3 years ago. The date was 20th Sept, and Mumbai had recorded the worst rains of the decade and was flooded to the brim. We had a huge show at ST Regis and a huge set up till 3 pm. We were unsure what was happening, 6 pm was the call time and Hrithik Roshan was supposed to come and walk the ramp along with other celebrities. I took a deep breath, confirmed Hrithik was coming and sent a broadcast message to all the guest list – Mumbai rains are unpredictable, but we are not. The show is on; see you guys @ 6 pm. As if this message had reached the rains gods, the rains stopped, and we had a full house. Incidents like this have happened time and again in my life. We are also partners with CES Las Vegas and IFA Berlin, the two biggest tech shows globally. Some of the biggest names from the corporate world, Bollywood celebrities, Sports stars, Billionaire Entrepreneurs as our friends and are on our speed dial.

Last year we started Influencer awards, and the first edition had Top 100 of them attend and saw all the big names like Bhuvan Bam, Ashish Chanchalani, Prajakta koli etc. and this led us to start our influencer marketing division which has given us a head start and helped us conclude the whole loop.

This is the pandemic year when all events and magazine printing business has almost come to a standstill. That’s when I realised that the brand Exhibit is beyond that, and our connections with our readers are what made us tick through our phenomenal digital existence. We launched aviatorsbuzz.com in peak lockdown in June, and exhibit.tech .Our Influencer marketing division is shooting TVCs, digital films doing celebrity and brand associations at breakneck speeds. Speaking of speed, we acquired publishing rights to BBC TopGear India and have been revving our engines, motors and hearts for over a year. TogGearMag. in receives millions of daily visitors, and our content matures every passing month. Since June, the relationship and trust that we have earned over the years with the brand owner to deliver have kept our offices open, and we have been on a hiring spree. I couldn’t ask for more. They say take the first step, and the roads open, and this is exactly what has been happening. But you have to be prepared for the opportunities when they are knocking on your door. Many ex-Exhibit members are doing very good in life and working in great companies, moved out of the country or have started their own companies and have always kept in touch. What else can you ask from a life in the first 15 years of your working life when you know deep down that it’s just the start?

Maxing the City at natrax

Indore, the cleanest city of the country, has never really excited the auto enthusiasts, but it’s like a turbocharger now and gets the adrenaline pumping and is on the map of all automobile manufacturers and enthusiasts alike. This surge in acceleration for Indore is because of NATRAX – National Automotive Test Tracks – which is about 50 KM from Indore, and the 11.3-km long track is currently the fifth-largest high-speed track in the world. For Auto Manufacturers, it’s a testing facility equipped with all sorts of tracks, but for enthusiasts, the needle stops or instead starts from the high-speed track. Usually, one would like to get their sports car, M or AMG machines and Max them here, but the Excitement of seeing the needle touching those extreme bars and redlining the speedometer is totally diabolic, and going through those parabolic curves is an exhilarating experience.
We had taken the Mercedes AMG GLE 63 S Coupe, which Roshan maxed at 295 km [check our Mercedes story. On the other hand, I wanted to drive a regular sedan and take the needle to the max, and hence zeroed down on a rather familiar Honda City. Will get to the “Why” of it ahead. Before that, Let’s get a reality check – How many of us can afford a Lamborghini, Porsche and the likes? But when you’re at NATRAX, a sudden rise of adrenaline will make you drive your regular sedan like a supercar.
While the Indian market is currently obsessed with all sorts of SUVs, sedans have their unmatched charm and appeal, and whoever said tracks are only made for supercars haven’t risked driving an everyday and affordable sedan on it. We always believe in breaking patterns, and we had an opportunity to break this old-school saying, so we did it most unexpectedly- by driving the Honda City on a high-speed track.

Why Honda City?

And why not? Honda City is one of the ideal sedans in our country and has been a household name since its first launch in 1998. Honestly, it was the first car that I bought with my hard-earned money, and somewhere I still have an emotional connection with. It’s a decorous sedan that amazed the world with its brilliance, year after year, decade after decade, and emerged as a game-changer. The car is so phenomenally dominant in the Sedan segment that no wonder it stands tall in every car manufacturer’s rival list. The sporty lineup of Honda City has grown tremendously over the years, but for me, the excitement of driving a Honda City remains the same because some things never change. When you are attempting to touch the top speed in an engine which is not meant for race track; you have to be careful with your choice or else anything can happen when revving at such top speed. That’s where you can rely on Japanese engineering.

The 2021 Honda City is 4549 mm long, 1748 mm wide, and 1489 mm tall. The wheelbase of the car hasn’t changed, it’s still at 2600mm, but the 5th-gen Honda City has a 10 mm lower stance than its predecessor, which makes it more suitable for a track experience. The cabin offers an ultra-premium feel and sophisticated vibes along with perfect driving position and adjustable headrests. An important feature to have for parabolic curves of a high-speed track. With the tilt & telescopic steering wheel adjustments and the plush comfortable seats, one can easily get in the right posture no matter how tall or short you are. Again high speed runs on the track guzzles fuel like a thirsty camel in the hot desert.

We picked the car’s petrol variant, which is Water Cooled and powered by an Inline 4 Cylinder i-VTEC DOHC with VTC and throws 89 kW (121 ps) best-in-segment power and 145 Nm torque albeit with a 40-litre fuel tank capacity. The six-speed manual transmission, which features 6 forward speed ratios, and CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), is the best innovation from Honda. We also wanted a car in a relatively affordable price band of around 15 lakhs on the road. So all of this makes it a perfect choice. Agreed?

The final lap towards the Top Speed

I did the first three laps just to get used to the track, understand the curves and straights, align the car with the track, and make mental notes in my mind. The fourth lap was an attempt to touch 190 km and see how the car behaved, and there I was fully confident to go for the kill. It was the 5th lap which was the one for records. Few checks – A/C off, Camera Mounted on the speedometer, seat belt fastened and I started pushing the pedal hard with all my thrust and engaged my right foot with the accelerator against gravity.

There is a time when you feel like lifting your feet to calm your fast pacing heartbeat, especially in those parabolic curves, but you have to keep reminding yourself against it. One lift-off means whatever you have gained in terms of speed will neutralise. I continued pounding and finally touched 208 km. Maybe had I prevailed more, I could have touched the 212-215 km mark, but it was a hot day. We had been driving the car for continuous laps and just the night before drove it from Mumbai to Indore on stock tyres. But the Honda City played like a true champion in my pursuit to set the records straight and helped me prove a point that, if you are half a good driver and have a trusted sedan, then it can be fun anywhere, even at Asia’s longest high speed track.
