Elon Musk, the man behind Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink, is officially on course to become the world’s first trillionaire after Tesla shareholders approved his record-breaking $1 trillion pay package. The tech mogul, who crossed the $500 billion net worth mark in October 2025, is known not just for his groundbreaking ventures but also for his unconventional spending habits.
From Vintage Icons to Space-Bound Cars
Musk’s car collection is just as bold as his ambitions. According to a reports, he owns several iconic vehicles including a 20th-century Ford Model T, celebrated for revolutionizing automobile production. Among his most unique possessions is the 1976 Lotus Esprit from the James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, a car that can transform into a submarine.
His collection has also featured a 1967 Jaguar E-Type Roadster, a 1997 McLaren F1, and a Tesla Roadster that he famously launched into space in 2018. Musk has also invested millions in private aircraft, explaining in a 2022 TED interview that he relies on a plane to “save time and get more work done.”
Mansions, Minimalism and a Prefab Home in Texas
While Musk now lives primarily in a modest home in Texas, his real-estate history tells a different story. In 2019, the reports say that he had spent nearly $100 million on seven properties over seven years in Los Angeles’ prestigious Bel-Air neighborhood including a ranch house once owned by actor Gene Wilder.
As of mid-2025, Musk still owns Wilder’s three-bedroom property after an attempted sale to the late actor’s nephew fell through. Despite his earlier spree, Musk later claimed he had sold almost all his homes and sometimes stayed at friends’ houses, even being described as “kind of homeless” by former Google CEO Larry Page.
Philanthropy or Tax Strategy? Inside Musk’s Controversial Charity Work
Musk’s charitable efforts have often drawn scrutiny. According to reports, tax filings from the Musk Foundation revealed it had failed for several years to meet its required donation targets. While the foundation’s website highlights its mission to support “human progress through scientific research and innovation,” reports suggest much of his giving has gone to organizations connected to him.
The publication described his donations as “haphazard and self-serving,” often structured to provide large tax benefits and indirectly bolster his companies. Despite this, Musk continues to portray his philanthropy as part of his broader vision to advance humanity.
A Billionaire Like No Other
Whether it’s turning classic cars into submarines, sleeping at friends’ houses, or sending rockets and cars into space, Elon Musk continues to redefine what it means to be a billionaire. As he edges toward trillionaire status, the world watches closely to see not just how he earns his fortune, but how he chooses to spend it.
